Gold Mountain

Jin Shan

After saying goodbye to my great-aunt in YangZhou, we boarded a bus to take us across the Yangtze River to the town of ZhenJiang. The plan was to spend a day there, before taking a short train ride back to Shanghai. I was suffering from a bad cold, it was raining, and I was just miserable. Not pleasant, stuck on a bus in humid weather with people who have less than acceptable hygiene.

So we arrived in ZhenJiang in about 55 minutes, leapt off the bus. Lunch was GuoGaiMian - a local specialty, it's a soup noodle dish served with braised eel. The food was fine - it was just that we were eating in a literal shitbox. Mud on the floor, dirty tables, raining outside - certainly not the most appetizing conditions. But at least it didn't give me food poisoning.

First stop of the day, to JinShan - a famous temple, translated as Gold Mountain. Quite busy inside, but as the following photos show, some interesting things. Again, no surprise, yet another example of commercialized religion. Unfortunate, but then again, we were north of the Yangtze.
