I've read my fair share in school about Gothic architecture, flying buttresses and all, but it's not until I actually stepped into one that I fully appreciated how magnificent these structures are. The Église Saint-Eustache is right at the head of Les Halles, a wonderful place to shop and eat on top of where Paris' old markets used to be.
Quite empty when we went in, which made the soaring columns seem even grander. The church was built using Gothic forms, but with Rennaissance details, particularly in the south and southeast facing sides. That pipe organ? It's supposed to be the largest example in France, surpassing the one found in Notre Dame de Paris.
We lit a candle before we left.
